A dramatic scene erupted at the President's Harambee House Office on Sunday when an ODM Member of Parliament entered into a fist fight with his female counterpart. Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel exchanged blows with nominated MP Sarah Korere as the two were awaiting Interior and Coordination Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery.
According to a report by the Standard, the duo was part of a delegation that was to meet with Mr Nkaissery for peace talks. When the chaos broke out under unclear circumstances, the members were thrown out of the Harambee Offices.
The Star recorded that Lempurkel met Ms Korere at Nkaisery's office and demanded to know why she wanted to meet the minister. It was there that a fight broke out with the Laikipia North MP allegedly slapping and kicking her in the stomach. Mr Lempurkel, who has since recorded a statement at the Parliament Police Station, accused Ms Korere of assaulting him.
The nominated legislator was taken to Nairobi Women's Hospital after the attack. “They were all thrown out of the office and did not manage to see the CS. They started shouting at each other before it degenerated to chaos," an eye-witness at the President's office divulged.
Confirming the incident, Central OCPD Paul Wanjama noted: “We don’t know what happened. We will seek statements from both MPs and hear their sides of the story before a decision is taken.” The two leaders have been at loggerheads with their conflict heightening after Ms Korere, who is in Jubilee, expressed interest in Laikipia North's seat come 2017 General Election.
