President Uhuru Kenyatta Issues Tough Conditions To Striking Doctors

The Government has rescinded the decision to awards striking doctors Sh.14.5 as promised before.

The offer was aimed at bringing to the end the doctors strike which has lasted for more than three months.
Earlier on, the striking doctors were promised a 50% increment in their salary as well as an additional sh.600M which was offered as a sign of goodwill to cater for the backdated allowances. If the government could have honored this offer then the doctor’s annual wage bill could have moved to an excess of Sh.14.5 billion. To an amazement, the doctors declined this offer and insisted that the increment was not in line with the 2013 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

After a consultative meeting between President Uhuru Kenyatta and the council of governors in Naivasha, they came up with a unanimous decision which will end the doctor’s strike.

Addressing the media, Peter Munya the Council of Governor’s Chairman in the presence of President Uhuru Kenyatta and other governors ordered the striking doctors to immediately return to work. Both insisted that failure to honor such commands will lead to disciplinary actions. Governor Munya retaliated that the additional offer made to the doctors was accompanied with one condition that they should call off the strike and then return to work.

As a result, the government then decided to rescind the earlier decision and then commanding them to return to work without any extra pay. This strike has been considered as one of the worst in the Jubilee regime. This is because it has lasted for so long without the concerned parties arriving at an amicable solution. Conversely, the doctor’s insists that they could only return to work if only the 2013 CBA is fulfilled. According to Munya, those doctors who have returned to work will be assured maximum security and they will be entitled to new allowances which will backdate to 1st January 2017.
