The move which follows the enactment of the amendments to the Electoral Laws on October 4, will see the second phase of mass voter registration kick off on January 16, 2017, to Feb 15, 2017.
Voter education week across the country will start on January 8, 2017, to January 15 while electoral registration of Kenyans living in the Diaspora will take place from February 1 to February 17. Individuals aspiring an elective position but are currently holding a public office have until February 7 to resign.
According to the guidelines, the electoral body has given political parties 14 days from June 10, 2017, to submit the party members list to the commission. At the same time, aspirants will be restricted from participating in harambees beyond December 7, 2016.
IEBC will invite the public as of April 10, 2017, to May 10 to verify their biometric data in the systems. According to IEBC Chief Executive Officer Ezra Chiloba, the revised dates will not affect the August 8th, election date despite events running behind the original schedule. In a statement, IEBC noted: "The Commission has made deliberate efforts to ensure that the changes introduced by the new law are implemented under a revised work plan.
However, there still remains some fundamental concerns on the elections amendment laws that the Commission has made known to Parliament and other stakeholders that must be addressed for an efficient and effective delivery of elections."
