Jubilee Politicians Ambushed And Almost Killed During Burial
Two Members of Parliament (MPs) and a Deputy Governor from the Jubilee Party were on Friday evening ambushed by gunmen during a funeral in Kerio valley, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
MPs Kangogo Bowen (Marakwet East), William Kisang ( Marakwet West) and Deputy Governor Gabriel Lagat had joined other mourners in Kasui village for the burial of Justine Kiptoo who had been killed earlier in the week by cattle rustlers when they were attacked.
Suspected cattle rustlers emerged from the bushes during the funeral and shot in the air while they escaped with livestock.
This compelled the legislators and other mourners to scamper for safety while others hid in the bushes and caves.
After the incident, Bowen lashed out at President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto for failing to curb the cattle rustling incidents that have been witnessed in the area.
"This is the reason why Kisang and I have said there is no point of being in Jubilee government anymore. We have buried people every weekend and raids are the order of the day," Bowen was quoted by the Nation.
Locals carried their belongings to unknown destinations claiming it was no longer safe to stay in the area due to the rampant attacks. Since May 2016, 16 people have lost their lives to cattle rustlers in the area.
