Residents of Lamu were shocked to learn that the County Government had allocated a whopping Sh35 Million to tea and mandazi in this year's budget.
According to the budget, Sh8.9 Million would be spent on tea in the office of Governor Issa Timam, while Sh6.9 Million for tea in the County Assembly. Infuriated residents accused the County of wasting resources questioning when did mandazi become so expensive. "We would like the money used to improve dispensaries like those that were vandalised by terrorists in Lamu East have." "Many hospitals do not have drugs and we have to make expensive purchases at chemists yet people are taking tea worth millions," a resident Ali Godana told the Star. Another local, Ali Musadiffa expressed that the money should have been used to build better hospitals in the County. "How expensive can tea and mandazi get in this county? Can someone explain why the Governor can allow such massive misappropriation and yet he is always saying he cannot steer development because Lamu gets little money?" Musadiffa posed. Residents accused the County of wasting resources from the National Government and urged the Auditor General to visit the place and take action. This comes as the latest outrageous budgetary allocation in Lamu County. Last month, residents were up in arms after the assembly set aside Sh670,000 to buy coffins, despite the county grappling with starvation among other challenges.
