More disturbing details have emerged into an incident where a General Service Unit (GSU) officer killed the girlfriend on Friday at the Recce Headquarters in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
According to detectives investigating the murder, the US-trained officer, Kennedy Mwarabu, sent a message to his wife in Mombasa County at 7:15am and told her to call his colleagues at 10am and find out what would have happened by then. After sending the message, Mwarabu used an M16 rifle and shot Nthenya Katheka – the girlfriend – 53 times at around 9:15am before turning the gun on himself. Reports indicate that Mwarabu could have been angered after the girlfriend informed him of her intention to quit the relationship and get married to someone else. The two are also said to have quarrelled over some Sh420,000 that Katheka had apparently obtained from the officer, the Star reports. Before the incident, sources privy to the matter indicated that Katheka had been living with the GSU officer for three months after he returned from the US. She is said to have moved out two weeks ago and was a frequent visitor. Mwarabu's colleagues stated that after hearing the gunshots, they went to his house and pleaded with him to surrender but he declined and killed himself. Mwarabu had been assigned to work at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on the fateful day but failed to show up.
