A male politician in Embu on Thursday ignited a fire during a session of the County Assembly when he demanded that his female counterparts be ordered to remove their bras.
Runyenjes Central MCA Steve Simba urged the County Assembly speaker to ask the female ward representatives to remove their bras and join other women across the globe in marking the 'No Bra Day' - a campaign in the fight against breast cancer.
Mr Simba further noted that the sergeant-at-arms should have checked each female MCA to prove that they had complied before sitting at the Assembly.
The outrageous demands were sharply criticised by the leaders with Makima MCA Penina Mutua highlighting that the women ward representative had their discrete way of marking the occasion, adding that they were in support of the campaign.
However, Simba who is in his late 20s rubbished the claims insisting that Ms Mutua together with his female colleagues could not be trusted with issues affecting women if they had not complied with the 'No Bra Day' drive.
“Is the member in order to mislead this House that they have joined the rest of the women in the world to celebrate yet she has not complied? Unless she confirms that she has complied she cannot purport to be in support,” Simba was quoted by Nairobi News.
Female leaders at the Assembly heavily condemned Mr Simba stating that he was simply mocking the issue with his despicable suggestions.
The Gender committee chair called on the ward rep to behave and respect women in the Assembly.
“I don’t know what is wrong with you yet you only got married the other day. I believed he had matured but up to now, there are still signs of him being young. We were not being checked here. Furthermore, the demonstration or confirmation would not have been carried out in this house. I advise the MCA to behave, we are mothers, we have respect and deserve dignity,” the chair stated.
The national 'No Bra Day' is observed annually on October 13 and on the particular day women refrain from wearing bras. The day is meant to promote breast cancer awareness and to help raise money for research.
